Technology drives the retail environment
I read an interesting report this week that explored how rapid advances in technology and data are likely to do for traditional shopping what Airbnb has done for room rental and Uber has done for taxis. Henry Mason, managing director of consultancy Trendwatching, says: ‘There is an interesting moment coming when you combine the internet of things and the sharing economy.’ Everyday physical items could soon have computer chips in them, which would mean that they could be connected to the web to be shared with anyone. Mason envisages the creation of a version of the Tinder dating app for retail, making it easy to find what you need in the local area. Everyone will be able to share, hire out and sell their own goods – we will all become retailers!
