I’m Not Mature

I don’t always agree with Karl Lagerfeld. I wasn’t amused when he called Adele “a little too fat”. And I thought it was a bit mean when he declared that “Pippa Middleton should only show her back.” But I’m rather liking his views on Pippa’s mum Carole. “I think the mother is sexier than the daughters. There is something full of life about her.

For a woman who must be 50 or so I think she’s great. Full of energy.” Too right Kaiser Karl! Actually Mrs Middleton is 57, she is practically claiming her pension. But have you seen her legs? They look easily as good as most twenty-something pins. Plus she’s slim, she has good teeth (which I presume are all her own) and she has extremely good age- appropriate style.

Which brings me on to the issue that really bugs me about being a hip, happening woman over 40 (are you liking the terminology so far?!). What is an agreeable term for modern lady of a certain age these days? There are fashion collections aimed at mature women, 40-plus women, 50-plus women and even “for you not your daughter” which really freaks me out. I may be at an age when I will only go to the pub if I’m guaranteed a seat but I am never ever going to buy clothes deliberately marketed in this way. Mature is such a hideously unexciting word – it makes me think of smelly cheese and being sensible! We need to come up with a new, modern, aspirational way of describing grown up style that makes us all feel fashionable and fabulous. Let me know if you come up with anything.
