I’m Not Mature

Wear skirts on or below the knee. Don’t expose too much cleavage. Avoid sleeveless tops…

Blah blah blah, I could go on with the list of fashion rules frequently applied to ladies of a certain age. Well I’ve just read the best piece of style advice ever from the Fashion Director of Vogue Lucinda Chambers. “Buy clothes you really love” is her tip from the top and, do you know what, it’s more profound than you might think.  Because in your quest to follow all the dictates of 40-plus dressing, you could end up wearing a beige cardigan! And where’s the fashion fun in that? Lucinda, who is in her 50s, says her latest purchase is a neon pleated skirt. How brilliant! Because, what’s the point of buying new clothes if they don’t make you feel glad to be alive when you get dressed in the morning. So while I’m all for keeping my bingo wings in purdah and wearing elegant skirt lengths, I also want to wear cool clothes that make me feel good. Does anyone know where to buy some?!?
